Study Mission in Nanging &
Shanghai (Oct 22 - 25, 2002)
The mission was jointly organized by Federation of China Telecommunication Business Limited FOCTB), Hong Kong Optoelectronics Association (HKOEA) and America Hong Kong Electronics Association (AHKEA) . It was the first time for such jointly event and was led
by Mr. Sunny Siu, the Chairman of FOCTB, Mr. William Yim, the Senior VP of HKOEA and Mr. Robert Li, the Chairman of AHKEA.
This four-day study mission started on Oct 22 in Nanjing, we were warmly greeted by Mr. Chen He Jin, Chief of Foreign Liaison &
Economy & Science & Technology Department and Ms. Huang Cui Yu, Director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the People's
Government of Jiangsu Province, and the group of Nanjing government officials, delegates from various departments and Overseas Chinese
Affairs Office. We had a cordial meeting by explaining our objectives while the local government and Overseas Chinese Affairs officials
illustrated the investment policies and the attractive features of Nanjing. |

| We were treated with great honour by Mr. Zhou Guang Ming the Secretary General of People's Government of Jiangsu Province for the VIP dinner. |
| On October 23, we had the chance to visit one of the largest electronic manufacturers in China, Panda Electronics Group Company Limited. The Mission was entertained by Mr. Fei Yuanwen, the VP of the company. The products of Panda is ranging from home appliances, DVD, TV to military communication equipment and personal computers. Panda is having joint venture with Ericsson and Samsung to manufacture their mobile phone. They also have joint venture with Sharp to make the LCD TV in Nanjing. |
| Subsequently, the Mission visited Nanjing New and High-tech Industrial Development Zone. We had meeting and site visit accompanied by Mr. Zhang Jianhua, the Deputy Director of Nanjing New and High-tech Industrial Development Zone. More than 16.5 square Km is allocated to the Zone which housed more than 1,000 enterprises from the world. The Development Zone welcomes investment and joint venture for electronics, software development and equipment manufacturers. We tasted a delicious lunch at the campus restaurant. |

| After lunch, we took a 4-hour ride from Nanjing to Shanghai. Right after our arrival, we received warm greetings from the Shanghai host, Ms Lu Shuping, Director & Senior Engineer, The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The Mission was entertained by the host at the famous Xin Jin Jiang Restaurant. |
| On Oct 24, after visit the National Electronics Fair 2002/ International Electronics Expo 2002 in Shanghai Even Bright Exhibition Centre, the Mission was having a very nice lunch hosted by Mr. Ng Tsung, one Chairman of FOCTB Chairmen Group and President of Shanghai City Mefastore company Limited, at his new restaurant. |

| After lunch, we met with Mr. Douglas Dong, the Assistant to President of Shanghai Foreign & Overseas Investment Development Board . Then followed by another meeting with Mr. Li Zhen Kun, Vice Director of Shanghai Communications Administration. |

| On October 25, we visited Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce. We met with Mr. Liu Xing Xie , the Vice Chairman, Mr. Su Lin , Secretary General of the Federation and delegates from more than 20 enterprises. |
Summary of the trip
The participants strongly believed it is an excellent mission. It is not easy to be recognized by local government and Overseas Chinese Affairs officials, but we accomplished the initial relationship building with them during this trip. We also realized that the electronic industry in China is being developed and improved at a lightning pace. There was much impossibility in the past but it was being turned into feasibility now. This mission explored mountain of opportunities for our members.
We highlight the opportunities as following:
- Development of your product in the giant China market
- Joint venture with Chinese companies
- Develop export market for Chinese companies
- Investment opportunities
It is just the first step. There are millions of golden opportunities waiting for us to uncover. We have to capture the right prospect and cultivate it. Members who did not have time for this trip, shall join our next event. HKOEA will keep on organizing events which will be exclusively for members only. |
